Purra Academy Dating Sim Game Review

Will Let You Bake Moon Pear Cakes?

Wish upon the Starry Moon and find true love in Purra Academy Dating Sim. This otome game created by nummyz transports you to the fantastic realm of Purra. You have 50 days to find true love. Will you succeed and stay there forever or will you return to Earth after your romantic adventure?

Kattie the Dream Kitty is the first character you meet upon launching the game. As Air, you are the only human in a land inhabited by animal spirits. While the story states that you are enrolled in the academy, you don’t really spend much time attending classes or doing school work. Instead, you are free to talk to and date potential love interests. These are not confined to a single race or gender either as the available options are pretty diverse. Heading to the actual school building gives you the ability to paint a portrait for the apple of your eyes or bake his favorite cake.

However, you can’t buy materials for the gifts without any shells (the game’s currency) and working to earn some shells will require you to expend HP.

HP is basically the most important resource in the game. This allows you to perform actions and interact with the potential love interests. For example, working requires 10 HP and it yields 30 shells while cooking needs 10 HP as well as 100 shells. Sleeping in the hotel will replenish your HP and start a new day.

Being a typical Pacthesis dating sim, the game ends when you finish a romance with one of Purra’s inhabitants. Talking to a potential love interest consists of picking from a couple of replies. If you manage to pick the one that makes him happy, you will earn some XP. XP isn’t carried over to other characters so you will need to focus your efforts if you wish to get a romance ending. Because the amount earned is consistent, you may want to compute early on how many turns it will take to woo the character of your choice. That way, you’ll have the option to start fresh if you think you won’t make the cut.

The process is simple enough to grasp, however, the game’s limited talk mechanics tend to get quite tedious. There’s ever only a maximum of two types of replies and a single correct choice. Unless you stubbornly refuse to switch answers, there’s little chance to get it wrong. There’s also no way to change Air’s attitude if you wish to impress a guy.

So you’ve managed to get enough XP and you’ve gotten sick of getting the “WHAT DID YOU SAY?” reply, what’s next? Well, you’ll have to check the Gift list to find out your sweetheart’s favorite cake. Once you learn whether he likes Musicberry or Moon Pear, you’ll need to work at the Shop to earn some shells. Get that cake baked, buy some fruit and paint a portrait to ensure a successful date.

Though the game’s simplistic mechanics could use some work, our biggest gripe here are the illustrations. Sometimes, a dating sim is only as good as its visuals and Purra Academy Dating Sim’s illustrations aren’t even close to being eye candy. The artwork for the females is passable with their big anime eyes and cheerful faces. However, the guys look too feminine and the poor proportions in general really hurt the experience. We applaud the developer for releasing a free-to-play dating sim but perhaps a friend could lend a hand in the graphics department if a sequel is in the works.

As for the game dialogue, we’re really on the fence. We can’t exactly applaud its predictable approach yet we can’t deny being amused during some sequences. We would have preferred to see the characters change their negative reactions instead of being stuck with one line the whole game. We also wouldn’t mind an option to change Air’s attitude without ending up in a dialogue loop. Perhaps a sequel would address these issues and add a few new features to keep things interesting.

So should you play Purra Academy Dating Sim? That depends on your priorities. If you don’t mind the art style and are after a simple, bite-sized game to keep you entertained, then this title is a candidate. However, if you’re looking for a fantasy-themed dating sim with swoon-worthy guys and gals, you may want to try Kingdom Days Sim Date by Pacthesis instead.
